Yacht, aircraft, classic car: what an exceptional asset really costs
The purchase price is only the start. Ownership costs decide whether the deal works.
An exceptional asset is often chosen with the heart. It is kept with a budget. Before buying, work out what it will cost each year.
1. Maintenance. Mandatory inspections, parts, upgrades: for an aircraft or a yacht this cost is regular and sometimes unpredictable.
2. Crew and operations. Captain, crew, pilots, technical management: these costs run even when the asset is not in use.
3. Insurance, berthing and storage. Marina berth, hangar, secure garage, and cover suited to the value and the use.
4. Ownership structure. Flag, registration, VAT, direct ownership or through a company: each choice has legal and tax effects to confirm with specialist advisers.
5. Resale. Market liquidity, depreciation, condition at exit: think about the sale from the day you buy.
A simple rule: compare the full annual cost with your actual use. Renting or chartering is sometimes more rational than owning.
