Starting a business in Luxembourg: the questions to settle before registering

Business permit, manager, legal form, place of business: the order of decisions matters.

Luxembourg attracts many entrepreneurs. Setting up is quick, provided you take decisions in the right order.

1. Does your activity require a business permit? Most commercial and craft activities, and many liberal professions, need one. Some require a professional qualification.

2. Who will be the manager? For a company, the permit rests on a natural person who actually runs the business day to day and meets the conditions of good repute and, where required, qualification.

3. Which legal form? Sole trader, SARL, simplified SARL, SA: the choice depends on capital, number of partners and your project. Your notary, fiduciary or lawyer will help you decide.

4. Where will you operate? The authorities require a fixed, real place of business in Luxembourg. A mere mailbox is not enough.

5. Social security, VAT, accounting. Plan the registrations, VAT number and an accountant from the start.
